Mauro Silva

Mauro da Silva Gomes is a former Brazilian soccer player who became a Spanish citizen. His natural position on the field was defensive midfielder.

He began his career in 1985 at Club Guaraní, where he played for his first two seasons. In 1989, he moved to Bragantino, where he remained until 1992, when he signed for Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña, where he spent the rest of his sporting career, which ended in 2005. Wearing the number 6 shirt, he led the so-called Superdépor alongside Bebeto and Fran. During this period, he led the club to titles such as La Liga and the Copa del Rey for the first time in its history. He played in the match known as the “centenariazo” on March 6, 2002, in which Deportivo lifted the Copa del Rey against Real Madrid CF at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, just as the latter was preparing to celebrate its centenary by lifting the cup. This match serves as a reference point for understanding Mauro's game, as Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña won the title largely thanks to the Brazilian's footballing display.

Mauro Silva was a very complete footballer, although he did not fit the prototype of the Brazilian player who usually comes to Europe. Although born and raised in Brazil, he could easily pass for a European defensive midfielder with great power. Mauro had tremendous physical abilities and worked with enormous tactical discipline, usually playing as a pivot.
